Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing (CWDM)

CWDM

Optimize Fiber Capacity with High-Performance CWDM Multiplexers and Demultiplexers

Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) increases fiber capacity by combining multiple optical wavelengths, or “channels,” onto a single fiber. Each wavelength transmits an independent data stream, enabling multiple signals to coexist on the same fiber without interference. CWDM uses passive optical filters to separate or combine wavelengths, supporting up to 16 channels on a single fiber. These channels can carry bi-directional traffic and accommodate different formats and data rates, all without risk of signal interference.

CWDM is especially valuable when fiber availability is limited. By dramatically increasing the data-carrying capacity of a single fiber, CWDM minimizes the need for additional fiber installations—an advantage when adding fiber is cost-prohibitive or physically challenging. This capability aligns perfectly with the trend of higher data rates, such as 12 Gb/s, which have limited the effective transmission distance of coaxial cables. CWDM allows broadcast and production facilities, campuses, and corporate environments to maximize their existing fiber infrastructure.

FCM/FCD-68xx Series: CWDM Modules for openGear

The FCM/FCD-68xx Series offers CWDM multiplexer and demultiplexer modules designed specifically for integration into openGear frames. Available in 4 and 8 channel configurations, these modules can be cascaded to create 12- and 16-channel systems, providing scalable flexibility. Ideal for applications where openGear frames are in use, these modules enable a compact, tidy setup that maximizes space efficiency while delivering reliable CWDM functionality.

FCM/FCD-99xx Series: Modular 1RU CWDM Platform

The FCM/FCD-99xx Series provides a cost-effective 1RU platform that accommodates up to three 16-channel CWDM multiplexer and/or demultiplexer modules in a single passive chassis. With low optical insertion loss, this platform helps maximize the available link budget. It is ideal for CWDM applications with Ultrix, but also integrates well with openGear and other CWDM-capable optical equipment. This modular 1RU design delivers high-density CWDM functionality in an efficient form factor.
